The fastest way to cut breakage is simple: right supplies + right orientation + tight fill. Use the pro methods below for dishware, glass, TVs, mirrors and artwork so your Calgary move is as stress-free as possible.

Essential supplies

  • Double-wall small/medium boxes, dish-pack with cell dividers
  • Packing paper (newsprint-free), bubble wrap, foam corners/edge protectors
  • Stretch wrap, painter’s tape (safe for finishes), glass/mirror cartons
  • Bold labels: FRAGILE, THIS SIDE UP, room name
  • Floor protection for load-out/load-in

Plates & bowls (vertical load)

  1. Line the bottom of a small dish box with a thick paper/bubble cushion.
  2. Wrap each plate in 2–3 sheets of paper; stack vertically like records.
  3. Fill voids tightly with paper. Heaviest items at the bottom.
  4. Bowls: nest 2–3 with paper between; wrap as one unit.

Glasses, mugs, stemware (cell dividers)

  • Use dish-pack with cell dividers; line each cell with paper.
  • Wrap stems separately, then the bowl; fill interior with crumpled paper.
  • Top layer = lightest pieces; add a final cushion before closing.

TVs

  • Best: original box. If not, use a TV carton with foam corners.
  • Remove cables/stand, bag and tape to the box; screen faces foam/card.
  • Keep TV upright; don’t lay flat; avoid cold-to-warm condensation shock.

Mirrors & framed art

  • Apply masking “X” on glass (reduces shard spread if cracked).
  • Edge protectors + bubble wrap + cardboard sandwich; then into mirror carton.
  • Pack vertical, tight; never on the bottom of a stack.

Labeling system that saves time

Mark three things on two adjacent sides: room, contents, fragility. Add a colored sticker per room (Kitchen=yellow, Primary=blue, etc.) — crews place boxes correctly without asking.

What movers’ insurance usually covers

Standard carrier liability is limited. High-value art/electronics may require declared value or third-party coverage. If you self-pack fragile boxes, coverage can be limited to external damage only. Ask us for options before move day.

Rule of thumb: small, heavy, fragile = small box. Large, light, bulky = large box.
